Privacy

Short version: you can read everything on EveryCheese without giving us anything. If you subscribe we keep your email address and the wording you agreed to. Analytics cookies are used only if you say yes, and never if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal.

The welcome screen

On your first visit a welcome screen offers the weekly email. It has an email box, an unticked box to agree to the email, and a Skip button. Skipping, or joining, sets one small cookie called cheese_welcome so the screen does not come back. It is a plain preference cookie and holds no identifier. The screen is not shown to search engines and other crawlers.

The close assistant

When your cursor heads for the top of the window, once in a visit, a small box asks what you were looking for and offers search and the pages you opened. Those pages are remembered in your browser's session storage until you close the tab, and are never sent to us. Dismissing the box sets a local note so it stays away for a week. It is not shown to crawlers.

What we collect

Email address, only if you subscribe and tick the box. We store it with the date and time you signed up and confirmed, the country your request came from, the page you signed up on, and the exact wording you agreed to. We use it to send the weekly email and nothing else. We first send one email asking you to confirm (double opt-in), and every email has a one-click unsubscribe link. Email is sent through Plinth, our email service.

Analytics, only with your consent. If you allow it, Google Analytics sets cookies and records which pages are visited, roughly where visitors are and what device they use. If you decline, or your browser sends a privacy signal, it is not loaded at all. Change your choice at any time with "Cookie choices" at the foot of any page.

Advertising counts. We count how often each sponsored placement is seen and clicked. The counts are totals per day and are not tied to you.

Bot detection. We may use ClearTrust to tell automated traffic from real visitors. It looks at technical signals of the request and does not identify you.

Links that leave the site

Reading links open their publishers. Those sites have their own privacy terms. Nothing is loaded from them until you follow the link.

What we do not do

We do not sell personal data or build profiles of readers.

Where it is kept

The site runs on Railway and Cloudflare. Photos are served by Wikimedia.

Your rights

Ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, or for it to be deleted, at cheese@cleartrust.cc. You can unsubscribe at any time from any email.
